Discussion:
As no remains of structures pointing to the existence of a monastery at the site have been found, the suggestion that it was so is based on two clues. The name "Deir", signifying a monastery in Arabic may indicated that the site actually was a monastery. However, this should be regarded with caution as it may be misleading. Chancel screen fragments found at the site indicate the presence of a church which lends some credence to the suggestion.
