Identification:

A local Christian tradition identifies the site as a monastery attributing its dedication to St. Catherin. The name of the site is suggestive of this. However, a Moslem tradition attributes the site to Sheikh Qatrawani who according to some traditions lived on the site, according to others, was buried here.

Surveys of the site identified remains of a church over part of which a sheikh's tomb had been constructed. Remains of walls and cisterns were observed west of the church.

General description

Churche/s:

The church (31 x 15.5 m) was a basilica. Six columns of the southern row remained in situ. Others were used for the construction of the sheikh's tomb.
