General description

State of preservation/which parts were uncovered:

The remains at the site consisted of ashlar built walls. The excavations revealed a large courtyard with rows of rooms on the western and northern sides. A rock hewn crypt and tombs. The construction of this monastery was of a higher standard than that of the other two monasteries excavated nearby.

General description

Enclosing walls:

The monastery was enclosed in walls but only parts of the northern and western walls were revealed. The western wall was exposed to a length of 50 meters. The excavators noted that it continued beyond the excavated area. This would indicate that the complex was a very large one.

Courtyards:

A large courtyard was unearthed, with rows of rooms on its northern and western sides. The courtyard was surrounded with covered passages.

Dwellings:

Ten partially preserved rooms were uncovered in the complex, some of which may have served as dwellings. They were paved with coarse white mosaics.

Burials:

A rock cut crypt was located beneath the courtyard. It was reached via a corridor located between the rooms and the courtyard. Tombs were located in the crypt, one of which had a cross engraved on the stone slab that covered it. Several other burials were found beneath one of the rooms of the monastery.

Water installations:

A large plastered cistern was found in the courtyard. Only a small part of it was cleared, its dimensions are not known. A second, smaller cistern was found. A system of channels surrounded the courtyard and beneath its pavement, one of which ended in the cistern.
