Location in the architectural complex:
Vestibule
Mosaic floor
Illustrative material:
Composition:
The vestibule (or the anteroom of the baptistery) was paved with geometrical mosaics. The white margin is followed by a triple border, composed of A1, a variant of A22 and A1 again. The field is H17 - a combination of squares and diamonds, where each square and diamond is filled with a unique geometrical pattern.
Geometric patterns:
Avi-Yonah A1
Avi-Yonah A22
Ovadiah H17
Discussion:
Both the design and workmanship of the vestibule are less fine than in the north chapel mosaic, but the result is no less impressive (Patrich, J. and Tsafrir, Y., 1993:265-272, p. 270).
