Illustrative material:
Materials, palette:
Red, white, black, blue and yellow.
Density:
Over 100 cubes in 10X10 cm.
Composition:
At the eastern end of the mosaic is eight rows of black crosses 15X15. in size. The mosaic is divided into several panels, of which five survived (from east to west): A) The east panel (2.04X2.65 m.) has a border of two-strand guilloche in between plain strips. The field consists of interlacing circles. B) The second panel (2X2.04 m.) has a border of plain strip and alternating circles and squares interlaced which contain simple geometric patterns of chequerboard, three-colored chequerboard and multicoloured squares. The field has a complex geometric design of interlaced circles and squares: A central circle containing two interlaced oval rings. The circle is surrounded by a square, surrounded by eight circles. Within the eight circles are two large squares laid diagonally and form an eight-pointed star. The pattern is surrounded by a circle. In the corners of the field, outside the largest circle, are rings which form three loops. C) The third panel (2.04X2.04 m.) has a border of plain strip with alternating squares and rhombs. The field has a complex geometric design of four squares and four hexagons around a central star made of eight lozenges. The squares are formed by bands which also serve to divide each square into four smaller squares, to form two loops on the two outer sides of large squares, and to link them up to the hexagons. The small squares contain patterns chequerboard, three-colored chequerboard, multicoloured squares. Of the hexagons, two are filled with four sided loops, and the other two with smaller hexagons. D) The forth panel (2.04X2.65? m.) was mostly destroyed. Based on the remains it is appear to have a circle surrounded by a square. In the circle are interlacing triangles, squares and circles. E) The fifth panel (2.04X2.04 m.) was almost completely destroyed. From the remains it appears to consist of a complex guilloche.
