Physical description : 

The upper of two epitaphs engraved on the same rectangular tombstone (for the other see Inscription no. 5). The writing in the two inscriptions differs enough to justify the conclusion that the epitaphs were engraved in different times.

Text: 

     ☩ Κατητήθη ὁ μακά-

     ριος Κασίσεος Στεφ(άνου)

     ἐν μηνὶ Πανήμου

4   δεκάτῃ ἰνδ(ικτιῶνος) ιεʹ τοῦ

     ἔτους υοζʹ. Ἐτῶν ἦν

     ὡς κζʹ μικροῦ πρός.

     Χ(ριστ)ὲ ὁ Θε(ός), ἀνάπαυσον

8   αὐτόν.

Translation: 

The blessed Kasiseos (son) of Stephan was laid to rest in the month of Panemos, on the 10th (day), indiction 15, year 477. He was about 27 years old, more or less. Christ the God, give him rest!

Apparatus: 

Ll.5-6 correction by Pleket (SEG), based on ph. and dr.,  βιώμηνως Negev, followed by Meimaris;  l.7 ὁ Θ(εό)ς mistakenly Negev and Meimaris.

Commentary: 

Year 477 of the era of Arabia corresponds to 582/3; in the Arab calendar, Panemos began on 20 June, which brings us to 29 June 582, in the 15th indiction.

Kaiseos is a Nabataean name, frequent in the Negev.
