Khan el-Ahmar - EUTHYMIUS

Paragraph:
28
Translation:

The great and enlightened Euthymius came back to his laura from the desert of Rouba after two years <of retirement, because of the anti-Chalcedonian disorders in 451-453>. One holy Sunday he was offering the bloodless sacrifice to God, while Domitian stood at the right side of the altar, holding the flabellum <liturgical fan>. While the oblation was being performed, Terebon the Saracen stood near the altar. resting his hands on the chancel-screen of the presbytery. Suddenly he saw a blaze of fire descending from heaven and spreading over the altar, like a curtain. The fire hid the great Euthymius and blessed Domitian and remained in place from the beginning to the end of the doxology of the Trisagion. Nobody saw this miracle, except those who were behind the blaze, Terebon himself and Chrysippus, brother Gabriel, who was an eunuch from birth and had come into the church for the first time that very day, after 25 years. So I was told by Abba Cyriacus the anchorite, who had heard the precise story from Terebon and from Gabriel. Terebon. seized with dread, fled back to the rear (of the church), and since that time stopped leaning on the chancel screen of the presbytery, as was his wont boldly and rashly to do during the divine oblation; instead, during the entire mass he would stand at the rear, near the church door, with awe and piety, according to the commandment that enjoins the sons of Israel to be pious and not contemptuous (of God’s majesty).
