(1) Furthermore in the place in which the lord was baptised, there stands a wooden cross as high as your neck, which, whenever the water covers it, is hidden. From this place the far bank, that is the one on the east, is within a sling-shot. But the near bank, on the summit of a small hill, supports a great monastery renowned for the Church of Blessed John Baptist. There is a bridge from it, supported by arches, by which people descend to the cross to pray. (2) Further on in the river there is a rectangular church supported on stone barners and under a roof of baked clay, where it is said that the Lord left his clothes when he was to be baptised. No one enters it, but only the waves surround it and go in.
