On capitals of three small pillars of an altar or offering table

Physical description :

Three small marble capitals (30 cm high, 8 cm in diameter) had a monogram engraved on one side of the abacus. The monogram consists of three letters, 1.2 cm high, surmounted by a long horizontal stroke with a serif to the right. A cross was engraved above each monogram.

Text:

ΙΑΡ  =  Ἰ(ωάννης) ἀρ(χιεπίσκοπος)  =  (Προσφορὰ) Ἰ(ωάννου) ἀρ(χιεπισκόπου) ?

Translation:

Offering of John the archbishop ?

Commentary:

If the interpretation of the monogram indeed refers to an archbishop, as suggested by Dauphin and Edelstein, and not, e.g. to an archimandrite, archipresbyter or archdeacon, then it can only desigante John of Tyre, who is mentioned in the church of Suhmata and was active around 555.

For a full discussion, including the proposed date (ca. 536) of the Dauphin and Edelstein, see Di Segni.

Date:
ca. 555 ?
