grafitto

Location:

On a natural rock wall at the eastern end of the mosaic pavement, below and a little to the left of the large cross of Inscription no. 19.

Physical description :

The script is formal lapidary. Letters are 2.5-3.5 cm high. In the first line, between the B and O of the second word, there is an unclear portion. The O is partly visible, and the H was probably hanging above the line. The last letter of this line is partly effaced. The inscription was very carefully made with a sharp chisel, and attention was given in keeping all letters in line and of the same hight.

Text:

☩ Χρ(ιστὲ), βοήθ(ε)ι το͂ν δοῦλόν σου

Ἰωάννου κ(αὶ) Παρθενόπη(ς).

Translation:

O Christ, help thy servant John and Parthenopa.

Commentary:

The grammatical mistakes, i.e. accusative instead of dative which in turn changes to genetive, are common in inscriptions from the Byzantine era.

Summary:
