Khirbet Khureitun - CHARITON; SOUKA; OLD LAURA

Paragraph:
20-21
Translation:

<In AD 547 Cyriacus went back to Sousakim for eight more years.>

(20) After having completed his eighth year in Sousakim, Cyriacus had reached a very old age. The fathers of the Laura of Souka came down and took him back to the cave of saint Chariton, after the expulsion of the Origenists from the New Laura. While he stayed in this cave, my humble self often visited him and I reared much fruit for my soul (from his conversation): he was very advanced in age, having already lived 107 full years. For he came to the holy city at the age of 18, and stayed with holy Gerasimus for nine years and in the monastery of Great Euthymius for ten years; then he spent 39 years in the Laura of Souka, distinguishing himself in several offices; then he was in the wilderness of Natoupha eating squills for five years and in Rouba for five years; then he-lived as a hermit in Sousakim seven years and in the cave of saint Chariton five years, and back in Sousakim eight years.

(21) Two years before his death the fathers went down and took him back with many supplications to the cave of blessed Chariton, he being very advanced in age. But though he was so old, (Cyriacus) was still hardy zealous; he stood during the office of Psalmody and would serve with his own hands those who came to visit him.

<Cyriacus died at the beginning of 557, two years after his return to Souka.>
