<Arcadius, having lost his brother in a shipwreck, went to Jerusalem to pray in the holy places; there he met an old monk, who revealed to him that his parents and brother had reached the holy city too and had entered the monastic life.>
Hearing this news, Arcadius was dumbfounded and fell to the old man’s feet, saying: “I beg you, father, make me too a monk” and (the old man) said to him: “Follow me”. And having followed him, (Arcadius) arrived at the Laura of Souka and was given a cell, in which the old man had lived for 40 years. (The old man) instructed him for one year, then went out into the desert, feeding on herbs, and said to him: “In three years I shall come back to you.”
