Nazareth - Archangel Gabriel; St. Gabriel - St. Gabriel

Paragraph:
II, 26, 1-3
Translation:

NAZARETH AND ITS CHURCHES

(1) Like Capernaum, the city of Nazareth has no walls, as we are told by Arculf, who was entertained there. It is "set on a hill" <Matt. 5:14>, and has large stone buildings, including two very large churches. (2) One, which is in the centre of the city, and stands on two vaults, is on the site where once the house stood in which our Lord and Saviour was brought up. (3) This church, supported, as we have said, on two vaults with arches between them, contains between the vaults a very clear spring. All the population goes there to draw water, and from this spring the water is drawn up into the church above by a winch.

Summary:
Confused description of the spring near the church where the Lord was brought up, from an itinerary of ca. AD 681-684, composed ca. 698.
Commentary:

As no spring issues under the church of Saint Joseph, its mention may be due to a confusion with the church of Saint Gabriel, where the first Annunciation occurred.
