And now our story, proceeding step by step, has brought us to the last thing in chronological order, but the first from the point of view of miraculous power. For, wherever he was, Chariton set great value on never being diverted from his life of seclusion, which, most of all, had raised him to the highest degree of spiritual stature. Therefore, when he discovered downstream a cave opening in a steep hillside, not far from this chaste laura – what is called to the present day “St. Chariton's hanging place”, as it is impossible to climb up there, except with a ladder – he thought to take his abode high up there. And some time having elapsed, Chariton became physically feeble on account of his great age, as well as owing to his extreme asceticism, so that he was unable to fetch by himself the water for his own needs. Wishing to avoid troubling one of the brethren on this account, he prayed to God, and immediately, from a corner of the cave, a limpid, cool stream was made to spring forth, and it flows to this very day.
