<Theognius leaves Theodosius’ monastery and goes down to Calamon in the hope of being healed of a growth in his finger.>
After that, by the grace of Providence he left Calamon and arrived at this place. And, having found a cave he took his abode in it alone, satiating his hunger with a little morsel of bread and a few carobs and quenching thirst with a cup of water, always fighting a strenuous battle against the demons that wage war (against man), through unclean thoughts. And he in truth like a radiant star upon earth, as he sat in his cave devoting himself to silence and asceticism, persisting, in fast, in the practice of sleeping on the bare ground, in shedding tears, in vigils, in constant genuflexions and in meditation of the divine word. Theognius was “then, if I am not mistaken, in the 50th year of his life, and many began to come to him, in search of his help. For his fame had spread abroad, and every one of the people who came because of different afflictions, went back full of joy.’ Conscious of spiritual guidance and of great relief.
