Qasr el Yahud; St. John the Baptist - ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST; PRODROMOS

Paragraph:
12
Translation:

On this bank of the Jordan there is a cave, in which are small cells occupied by seven virgins. They are enclosed there as little girls, and when one of them dies, she is buried in her own cell, another cell is carved out (of the rock) and another little girl is placed there, to keep up the number. Outside they have (servants) who attend to their needs. We entered that place with great reverence in order to pray, but we did not see the face of anyone of them. It is said that the cloth which covered the Lord’s brow is kept there. On the (bank) of the Jordan, not far from the place where the Lord was baptised, there is a very large monastery of Saint John, in which are two hostels for pilgrims.
