Another pious and trustworthy monk told me this story: “Once another monk and I accompanied the miracle-worker (Stephen) to the wilderness of the Jordan, and when we came to the river bank, it was in the dead of night – It was past the first and maybe the second watch – but the old man did not agree to go into the monastery of the Precursor, Saint John the Baptist. We submitted to his wish and lay down alongside the Jordan stream, and he yielded to our entreaties and lay down with us. But I desired to see him recite his office of the nocturnal psalmody, especially since the weather was clear and the moon shining and full <which conditions assured good visibility>; so I pretended to be fast asleep…” <The monk saw Stephen walk over the water and perform the divine office on the opposite bank of the Jordan.>
