The monastery was constructed of large stones. It has been suggested that the site served as a Roman fortification before the monastery was founded (Magen and Kagan 2012 I: 307).

Based on Cyril of Scythopolis' account, the monastery was founded ca. 465 CE. No phasing was reported although it has been suggested that the caves located to the south of the monastery may have served it in its earlies stage (Patrich 1984: 62).
