A domed niche is built into the eastern wall of the room. The niche is 1.45 m wide and 3 m high. In the middle of the floor of the niche is a sunken reliquary base measuring 0.45 X 0.6 X 0.3 m. The base of the niche is coated with plaster and was originally faced with marble. The walls were painted. The floor of the room is paved with stone slabs. The southern pastophorium measures 3.6 X 3 m and is identical in shape to the northern one. It also has reliquary base in the floor of the niche. Both pastophoria were dedicated to the cult of the martyrs. Behind the southern chancel screen there is a socket in the floor for the leg of a small offering table. N apse, S apse A small limestone reliquary was found in the southern pastophorium. The reliquary containing two compartments with a small cavity for oil in the corner of each. Four tombs were found under the floor of the aisles, two tombs at each aisle. Another two tombs were found under the floor of the eastern portico of the atrium. The tombs are covered with a stone slab (epitaph) incorporated into the floor. Under the epitaph there is an earth fill and under the fill is the tomb itself, covered with stone slabs. 11989 Rehovot in-the-Negev North Church Pilgrims' church Basilica with an annexed chapel Central Negev Elusa Palaestina III + The crypt measuring about 3.4 X 4.3 m. It was built under the bema. Its lower part was hewn into the rock, while the upper section was built of stone and roofed by a barrel vault. Originally, the crypt was entirely revetted with marble panels, some of which were discovered in situ. Two flights of steps led in and out of the crypt from the aisles. This arrangement facilitated movement of processions of worshipers without interfering with the regular services in the church. No reliquary was found in the crypt, but the cavity at the base of the apse in the east wall of the crypt is a clue of its existence. The reason for the veneration of the church and its crypt is unknown, but surely a sacred relic was housed at the spot. A base of an altar or an offering table was found in the apse, which indicates that the apse served the cult of the relics (likewise the southern apse). An irregular room, accessed from the east, was left behind the apse. Identical to the northern apse. 1.90m in diameter, 2m deep. Stone pedestals, 0.63m square, uncovered in the side apses served to retain a secondary table in each indicating that both served the cult of relics, An irregular room, accessed from the east, was left behind the apse. On the apse cord N apse, S apse, crypt Fragments of two reliquary lids were uncovered. One - gabled. Several burials were discovered under the church's floor. The burials were indicated by funerary inscriptions which were the base for dating the church. AM 1

N & S The northern apse is 2.7 m wide, 1.6 m deep and 4.4 m high. There is a niche in its center, 1 m wide, 0.84 m deep, 1.8 m high and about 0.6 m above the floor. In its center there are remains of a reliquary box of limestone. It was built into the floor of the aedicula and held by mortar. Identical in size and shape to the northern apse. In the southern niche there are no signs of a reliquary. N apse, S apse A limestone reliquary was found at the center of the aedicula in the northern apse. The reliquary measures 0.5 X 0.34 m. It is possible that another reliquary was originally placed also in the southern aedicula but it was not found. The baptismal font is situated in the apse of the baptismal chapel. It is monolithic and cruciform in shape (about 1.6 X 1.6 m). It is made of limestone and was probably covered with marble slabs. The basin measures 1.25 X 0.5 m and is 0.95 m deep. Three steps lead into it from the east and the west. The font was fed with water from a pipe running through the eastern wall of the chapel. Monolithic cruciform cruciform 4a The two chambers above the lateral apses apparently constituted the east ends of the galleries above the two aisles. The galleries had columns bearing arches. Throughout the church column shafts were found which were too small for the principal arcades of the basilica. Several tombs were found under the floors of the atrium, narthex and the chapel, with inscribed tombstones dated from the sixth and seventh centuries. AM 1

716 IETHIRA; Khirbet Yattir Village Church (Area D) Parochial Basilical Hebron Hills Eleutheropolis Palaestina I + A natural cave seems to had served as a crypt. The entrance to the cave did not survive, but it is assumed to be north of the room with benches (mentioned in Attached structures). In addition, a corridor was built leading to a narrow opening in the south-east slope. A skeleton of a young woman was found in a natural niche in the southern wall of the cave, with an oil lamp dated to the 1st-2nd century C.E. beside her. The excavators believe that the church was intentionally built on top of burial from the Second Temple period. Facing South-East, in order to avoid causing damage to a natural cave located under the church. Yes Yes Yes 2 SB 1

In the southeast corner of the nave, 0.9 m under the mosaic floor, a single tomb was found. The location of the tomb was marked with a stone with a tapering depression and a hole, implanted in the floor. The depression facilitated the pouring of oil into an elongated, narrow, imported amphora (0.77 m , high, 0.18 m wide), placed underneath. The vessel was laid inside the tomb; it was set above, leaning against the western side of the shaft. There was no hole in the cover stone of the tomb; the bottom of the vessel was intentionally broken (perhaps for reaching of the proper height). On its walls a Greek name was written in ink - ZHNON. The hole in the stone was originally protected by a metal grid. Marks of fire were recognized around the stone, more strong and evident than in other parts of the church, due to the burning of oil. The tomb might had belonged to a local saint who was venerated in the church. Few fragments of broken bones mixed with earth were found in the tomb, belonging to a male 30-35 years old. He was lying with his head to the west, so that the said vessel was placed above his head. It seems that the constructing of the tomb preceded the church building, since it was lying under the mosaic floor. AM 1
