13557 Kafr el-Makr Church 1 Local residents call the ruin in the 1960's after St. Barbara, but it is not known how far back this name goes. The carpet in front of it might have belonged to the bema, rather than to the nave. In this case the bema was U-shaped. Hemispherical N & S Two elongated lockable rooms ending in the east in a shallow apse. Both extend farther east beyond the external wall of the central apse. Like the northern, but only partially preserved. Tzaferis suggested that the thickness of the external walls suggest that galleries had existed above the aisles. SB 1

A burial crypt. It seemingly served for the burial of clergy and monks. Bones of about thirty male skeletons were uncovered in it. It was added in Phase 1b, when the openings connecting the pastophoria with the apse were blocked. N & S A broad room that extends up to the northern wall of the northern annex. On the apse cord under altar A stone box (65x35 cm) under-altar reliquary was found in a 35cm deep depression on the cord of the apse. Remains of the altar itself were not uncovered. An oval baptismal font, masonry built, was installed in the southern pastophorium under emperor Maurice (582-602). A mosaic inscription date it to Dec. 585. The two eastern units of the southern annex constituted together a three-units baptistery.
